Born in Glasgow to Irish parents, Alexander Carmichael joined the IRB and the Irish Volunteer movement whilst still in Scotland. In 1915, he took part in a raid on the Uddington colliery in Hadingston, obtaining explosives which were then smuggled to Ireland. He moved to Dublin and fought with the Kimmage Garrison in the GPO during the Easter Rising. After the surrender he was sent to Knutsford Jail and later to Frongoch prison camp, where he was interned until December 1916. He subsequently returned to Glasgow and was appointed Captain of the local company of Irish Volunteers. He died in 1920 after taking ill and was buried in Glasnevin cemetery.
