An engineer with Dublin Corporation, Cathal MacDowell served with the 3rd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers in Boland’s Mill during the Easter Rising. Following the surrender, he was interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp where his health deteriorated. Released in 1917, he participated in the War of Independence and was involved in the attack on the Customs House in May 1921. Still suffering from poor health, he moved to France where he died in 1926.
