Charles Donnelly was sworn into the IRB in 1912 and joined E Company in the 4th Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers the following year. He set up barricades in and around the GPO on Easter Monday, 1916, and manned them for the duration of the week. He was interned in Knutsford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until Christmas 1916 and served as a lieutenant of his unit during the War of Independence. Donnelly did not participate in the Civil War.
