James Coady joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, becoming a member of A Company in the 1st Battalion of the Wexford Brigade. He fought in Enniscorthy during the Easter Rising and was one of the advance party that seized the Ferns RIC Barracks. He was interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916.
