A member of the Lusk Company in the 5th Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, John Clarke reported to Ashbourne, Co. Meath, at the beginning of the Easter Rising. He was sent with a number of others to the GPO on Easter Tuesday and was subsequently detailed to the Mendicity Institute, where he served with the 1st Battalion until their surrender on Wednesday.
