A member of D Company in the 4th Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, Joseph McGill fought in the Four Courts area during the Easter Rising. He took up a position at a barricade on Church Street Bridge, where he served under the command of Peadar Clancy. Following the surrender, McGill was arrested and interned until December 1916. He rejoined the Volunteers upon his release and served as an intelligence officer with the IRA during the War of Independence.
