A member of B Company in the 3rd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, Michael Phelan joined up with the 2nd Battalion in Jacob’s Biscuit factory on Easter Monday. As well as defending the factory, Phelan helped to erect barricades on New Street and took part in raids for provisions during the week. Following the surrender, he was deported to Knutsford Prison and was interned in Frongoch prison camp until Christmas 1916. Phelan briefly rejoined the Volunteers upon his release, leaving in 1917 due to poor health.
