Patrick Dunphy helped to establish a branch of the Irish Volunteers in Crutt, Co. Kilkenny and became lieutenant of the company upon its foundation in 1914. The Crutt Company mobilised and paraded on Easter Sunday but, after receiving no further communication or instructions, they dispersed. He helped to reorganise the Volunteers in the aftermath of the Easter Rising and became captain of the Crutt Company, taking part in raids and the destruction of the Railyard R.I.C. Barracks during the War of Independence.
