Biography

A cattle dealer, Patrick Gallagher fought in the Easter Rising as a member of E Company in the 4th Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers. After being part of an attempt to blow up the railway bridge over the East Wall Road, he took up a position on the roof of the GPO, where he engaged in a battle with a sniper in Trinity College. Interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916, Gallagher rejoined the Volunteers upon his release and fought in the War of Independence, taking part in an ambush on British troops in Templeogue and the destruction of Rockbrook RIC Barracks, amongst other activities.
