A member of the Hibernian Rifles, Peter McPartlin joined the GPO garrison at midnight on Easter Monday, 1916. He was posted to Hopkins and Hopkins at the corner of Eden Quay on Tuesday morning, where he remained until Thursday. He was then sent to the Independent Newspaper Offices on Middle Abbey Street, returning to the GPO briefly before the surrender. McPartlin was afterwards interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp. He joined E Company in the 2nd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers upon his release but was excused from service in 1918 following the death of his wife, which left him as the primary guardian of their nine children.
