A member of D Company of the 1st Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, Sean O’Carroll fought in the Four Courts and Church Street area during the Easter Rising. He was subsequently interned in Kuntsford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until August 1916 and rejoined the Irish Volunteers upon his release, though his activities were limited by poor health. O’Carroll joined the National Army in August 1922 and maintained a position with them until 1927.
