A member of the Ferns Company in the Wexford Brigade of the Irish Volunteers, Charles Doyle took part in the Easter Rising in Enniscorthy. Placed in Wakefield Prison for three months afterwards, Doyle rejoined the Volunteers and participated in the War of Independence, taking part in raids and attacks in the Wexford area. He also fought with in the Civil War, serving with the National Army until September 1922, when he was discharged.
