A member of the Gaelic League and the IRB, Frank Lawless served as Quartermaster with the 5th Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising. He participated in the attack on Ashbourne RIC Barracks and was interned until June 1917. Interned again in 1918 in relation to the “German Plot”, Lawless was elected as a Sinn Féin MP for the Dublin County North constituency in that year’s general election. After participating in the War of Independence, he voted in favour of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in January 1922 but died three months later following an accident with a pony trap.
