A prominent member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Derry native John Joseph Scollan was National Director of the Hibernian Rifles at the time of the Easter Rising. After leading a group of his men to the GPO at midnight on Easter Monday, Scollan was posted to the Royal Exchange Hotel and later to Broadstone Railway Station, where he was captured by a British sentry. He was interned in Wandsworth Prison, Frongoch prison camp, Reading Jail and finally Wormwood Scrubbs before being released at Christmas 1916.
