A member of G Company in the 2nd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, James Mooney missed the mobilisation on Easter Monday as he was attending the Fairyhouse Races, where he backed the winner in the first race. Having failed to link up with his unit in St. Stephen’s Green, Mooney entered the GPO garrison where he spent the remainder of the week, spending the majority of his time on the roof. He was tasked with fighting the fire that erupted during the week but eventually evacuated to Moore Street on Friday evening along with The O’Rahilly. He was interned in Knutsford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until Christmas 1916. He rejoined the Volunteers upon his release but subsequently moved to Manchester and later to America.
