A farmer from Lusk, Co. Dublin, James Rooney fought in the Easter Rising with the 5th (Fingal) Battalion in the Dublin Brigade of the Irish Volunteers. Deported to Knutsford prison on 3rd May, Rooney was afterwards interned in Frongoch prison camp.
