A member of C (Shannon) Company the Enniscorthy Battalion of the Irish Volunteers’ Wexford Brigade, Michael Cahill fought in Enniscorthy during the Easter Rising, taking up a position on Mitchell’s corner at the beginning of the week. Following the rebels’ surrender, he was sent to Stafford Jail on the 8th of May and was later interned in Frongoch prison camp, where he remained until Christmas. He rejoined his old company in the Volunteers upon his release. A supporter of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, he joined the National Army and defended Enniscorthy from republican forces during the Civil War.
