Patrick Furey joined the Oranmore Company in the Galway Brigade of the Irish Volunteers in 1914. He participated in the Easter Rising two years later, taking part in the attack on the Oranmore RIC Barracks and the occupation of the Athenry agricultural station. He was interned until June 1917, serving time in Dartmoor and Lewes prisons. Suffering from ill health as a result of his internment, Furey was involved in carrying dispatches during the War of Independence.
