A member of the Wexford Brigade of the Irish Volunteers, Patrick Ronan participated in the Easter Rising in Ferns and Enniscorthy. He was afterwards interned in Wandsworth prison and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916. Ronan continued his involvement with the Volunteers in subsequent years and became Vice Commandant of the Ferns Battalion before being arrested in November 1920. He assisted in the escape of 21 prisoners from Kilworth camp in September 1921 and was afterwards transferred to Spike Island, spending the duration of the War of Independence in prison.
