An engineering student in University College Dublin and member of Na Fianna Éireann, William Staines served under Seán Heuston in the Mendicity Institute during the Easter Rising. Shortly before the post was surrendered on Wednesday, a British hand-grenade was thrown into a room where a number of Volunteers were stationed. Staines picked it up and attempted to throw it out the window, but it exploded before it left the room and he was severely injured. After receiving treatment in King George’s Hospital, he was detained in Kilmainham Gaol, Knutsford Prison, Wandsworth Prison and Frongoch prison camp. He died two years later, on 2nd November, 1918, following a short illness.
